Reptiles of the Galapagos Islands

Reptiles of the Galapagos Islands

For avid nature lovers, a small group wildlife cruise in Galapagos affords a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to encounter a wide range of unique animals, including a host of fascinating reptiles.
The local habitat is extremely favourable for reptiles and the original arrivals were more than likely washed up on the shores attached to driftwood or vegetation that came from mainland South America. Because they can subsist on very little water, many more of them would have survived the journey than their mammal compatriots. Over the ensuing millennia, they evolved to adapt to their habitat in many ways – so much so that they are virtually unrecognisable from their ancient ancestors.

The Giant Tortoise

Needing little introduction, Giant Tortoises are probably the most sought-after sighting for visitors on a wildlife cruise in Galapagos. While they have no natural predators and were free to live extended lives and evolve to their massive proportions, at one stage human intervention (from pirates and whalers) decimated their numbers. Today, however, they can be observed in their natural habitat (predominantly in the cool, lush highlands of Santa Cruz), and also in the breeding stations on Santa Cruz, Isabela and San Cristobal. True to their name they can grow to weigh up to 250kg.

The Marine Iguana

These remarkably adapted animals are the only sea-going lizard in the world. Their ability to dive for food to depths of 15m sets them apart as a unique endemic species. They’re able to regulate their own body temperature and are quite often seen sunning themselves on the rocky shoreline in order to bring their temperature back to normal after oceanic dives. They can be found throughout the coastal habitat of the archipelago and, like the majority of the wildlife here, are not concerned by the presence of humans.

The Land Iguana

Land Iguanas are larger than their marine counterparts and are not seen as prolifically. They tend to be quite solitary in nature and prefer to forage alone for their food source (vegetation) in a grassy scrubland habitat. Their preferred delicacy is spiky cactus plants, which the hardened, coarse skin around their mouth allows them to devour, spines and all. A new Pink Iguana has recently been discovered on the volcanic slopes of Isabela, although due to the nature of their very small population it’s not possible for visitors to see them.

The Lava Lizard

Lava Lizards can be seen scurrying around everywhere, seemingly always in a hurry to be somewhere else. They subsist on a diet of small insects and grow anywhere up to 30cm in length. The seven endemic sub-species of the lizard all have unique adapted characteristics, depending on where they’re found. Experienced naturalists can tell at a glance from which island they come.

Reptiles Unique to the Region

Some of the other reptiles that might be seen are any of the nine species of geckos and the four sub-species of small, harmless snakes. Most of the reptiles of the region are now considered endemic, which means that those who explore these fascinating islands on a wildlife cruise in Galapagos will see animals that cannot be found anywhere else on the planet.

Nature on Display: Tips for Shooting the Galapagos Wildlife

For wildlife lovers, a vacation in the Galapagos is often an old dream and a real “bucket list” experience. This remote island off the coast of Ecuador is home to some of the most unique wildlife on Earth, and offers the opportunity for some very close encounters. For those who want to take advantage of most opportunities to take animal photos, some specific tips from experts can help.
Tips for Photography at Holiday Galapagos Nature on Display: Tips for Shooting the Galapagos Wildlife

There are many generic tips for photographing wildlife (including the most basic, ie patient), but there are also some specific ones to capture great images of these remote island animals.

Be prepared

This suggestion has a double meaning: You need to be prepared in terms of equipment, but also at a situational level. Taking the right camera and accessories is essential, and SLRs with interchangeable lenses will produce far superior results to the iPhone, however up-to-date the model. The wildlife in the archipelago is unbelievably fearless, so there is no need for long focal length and long fixed lenses, but if you are serious, short and medium lens combinations are recommended. As a guide, consider (at least) the 18mm-70mm lens and the 100mm-400mm. Nature on Display: Tips for Shooting the Galapagos Wildlife

Another aspect of preparation is getting ready to get “money fired” without too much notice. Wild wildlife, however, and animals will not wait for you to focus, change openings and frame the scene perfectly – even though the Giant Tortoise Galapagos may be an exception. Read it every time and frankly, keeping your eyes peeled so you can take advantage of the situation as it appears.

Lighting

Due to the geographical position of the archipelago at the equator, the sun rises and sets rapidly, spends much of its time just above the head. This results in harsh and top-lit conditions that are often less conducive to capturing wildlife images. What you should aim for is low-side lighting, which creates greater interest in texture and shaded contours. Without the benefits of an artificial studio lighting, the only real solution is to get up early before the sun reaches overhead, or later at night when it goes down. An added bonus of this is that you can get some spectacular and dramatic pictures by using sunrise or sunset to give the backlight on your subject. Expose

Even if you set your SLR for automatic exposure, lighting and conditions in the archipelago are often beyond the reach of the most advanced camera metering system. For example, bright white plumage in Nazca Booby perched on black volcanic rocks will cause the camera to glow for darker areas, and then highlight it more deeply. A good tip is to use the +/- function on your camera, which will override the meter and fix one or two stops to expose the bird and not the rocks.

Think laterally

In addition to the technical aspects, the most important advice of the knowing experts is to think out of the box and actually take advantage of the incredible opportunities that you will encounter on Galapagos holidays. Do not just follow the crowd and photograph the animals from a static point of view – go down to the sand with Sally Lightfoot Crabs, ride high on rocks with the Marine Iguana, and cross into shallow rivers with weird Sea Lions (obviously keeping your camera protected). Being creative with angles is one of the surest ways to open up to this once-in-a-lifetime image.

Turned Good to Great

Meanwhile, for some people, the Galapagos holiday is quite a gift in itself, for others, catching amazing photographs is a very important aspect. Wildlife photography can, in essence, be a very challenging quest. And while being in the right place at the right time can reap amazing rewards, following a few tips to take advantage of those “timely, right place” moments can make the difference between good and good photos. 4 Signs of a Gas Pressure Problem

4 Signs of a Gas Pressure Problem

Natural gas or propane are both great ways to provide heat to your home and a flame to cook your food. Appliances that run on natural gas or propane need the gas to be at a specific pressure for the appliance to work properly. If the pressure is off, it can result in the appliance not working at all or other potentially dangerous issues. If you suspect that you are having a pressure issue, it is a good idea to have a gas line pressure test in Marietta to be sure that everything is working correctly. Here are a few signs that you might be having a pressure issue in your gas line.

Trouble lighting – If your gas stove is slow to light, it could mean that there is not enough pressure to push the gas through to the burner. If the ratio of gas and air is off, it will make it much more difficult to ignite.
Orange flame – If you notice that your appliance has an orange flame, that could also be a sign of a pressure issue. It could also be a sign that there is a problem with the burner tube, especially in water heaters and furnaces.
Excessive flame – If the flame seems unusually large or high, this could indicate that there is too much pressure in the line. If the pressure is not reduced sufficiently it could lead to a dangerous situation
Soot – One of the biggest signs that something is not right can be soot. This black smoky residue may begin to build up on the bottom of your pans, showing that something is not right. This will often be accompanied by an orange flame as well. This one may be harder to find in sealed appliances such as your furnace or water heater.

Gas line issues are never fun and can actually be dangerous. If you suspect that your gas lines do not have the correct pressure, it is very important that you have a gas line pressure test performed in your home in Marietta. A professional can then properly correct the situation so that your appliances get back to working at maximum efficiency. Oftentimes, the issue will be a regulator or a leak in the gas line. Regulators control the amount of pressure in your gas lines and appliances and will wear out over time. If you think you may have an issue, you need to contact a professional plumber as soon as possible to get it corrected.

Making the most of your running

Making the most of your running

No matter if you ‘ve just started running or having been running for years, there will be times when you just do not feel like getting out the door. For some, it may be just for a day or two – for others it may be for a little longer. Here are some tips to help keep you motivated with your running.
Buy some new shoes or running clothes. This works great for me! I love getting new clothes – especially pretty, bright shorts in the Spring. And, it does work to get you motivated. You can not wait to head out the door in your new duds. New shoes work the same way, also. I love my first runs in my new shoes. It’s a really special day to have new shorts and shoes on the same day!

Set some goals for your running. These goals can be different for different runners. You may want to increase you long run until you are doing a distance that you’ve never run before. You may want to run your first race. You may want to run your marathon. All of these are the goals that you can set. Having these goals give you the motivation to complete your goals and to get out the door.

Run different routes. Many runners run the same route day after day and they get bored. Head down a different road. Drive somewhere and run in a completely different area – maybe even a park or a trail. I love to head down new roads and go exploring! This is a great way to add some variety to your training and break any boredom.

Add some cross-training to your workout program. Adding some swimming, walking or cycling on your days off from running may help you get motivated again. Plus, it’s great to do something to work the muscles that you do not use in your running.

Many runners run with a group or with a friend a couple of times a week. In addition to the socialness of running and talking with someone, you will want to get out the door to meet with them. You do not want to show up for your run.

If you plan on running for years and years to come – there will be when you will go through these low-motivation spells. Hopefully these tips will help you to get back on the roads quickly and get excited about your running again.
